It's actually Courier.  lists.sourceforge.net's Exim claims its not 
capable of accepting 8-bit mail.  So, if you were to use an 8-bit
character set, Courier would then re-encode your words of wisdom in
quoted-printable, before sending it to lists.sourceforge.net

Yes, it's necessary, because that's what it tells you to do.
Everything is so fine, so far.  But now, lists.sourceforge.net
appends  an advert to the list message, that contains
the '=' character that's not followed by two hexadecimal digits.  And, the
message's encoding is quoted printable now.
I opened a bug to sourceforge.net.  Let's see what they
do about it.  Previously I mentioned that I might move the lists off SF,
however, for now, this is not something that's worth the trouble and hassle
of moving a 1300+ subscriber list.

PS. Someone explain what possible freaking excuse Exim has
for not listing 8BITMIME.
