  I tested that didn't work.

Email clients will re-download everything.

I tested Eudora,Outlook Express and Microsoft Outlook. If I set up leave 
message on server using Eudora and
read all messages, when I used Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook,they 
still re-download everything treat all
messages un-read.
