Heya, I've just setup the same software and had the same fault.
Recompiling CourierImap with the --without-authdaemon option and then recompiling vpopmail with the --without-clear (I think that's it - no clear text passwords anyway.) There was also a suggestion in the mailing lists archives to use a newer cvs version of vpopmail.... our authentication problems went away after doing these steps. Hope that helps.
