I have a working qmail install on Mandrake 8.2. This includes qmail 1.03, the QMAILQUEUE patch, Vexira virus-scanner and qmail-pop3d. In a nutshell, my current configuration is as follows:
I have one instance of qmail listening on port 25, Vexira listening on port 725 and a second instance of qmail listening on port 825. The first instance of qmail is responsible only for accepting inbound mail, RBL checks, rejecting connections/mail from selected domains/hosts and forwarding accepted mail to Vexira. Vexira forwards scanned mail to the second instance of qmail which delivers all mail for mail.theotherbell.com locally and forwards mail for theotherbell.com to an Exchange server. My ultimate goal is to get rid of the Exchange server. Finally, I am not using virtual domains. I've looked at a lot of the information I've been able to find about Courier-IMAP -- the home page, faq, readme and install files from www.inter7.com, Henry Chen's document on qmail-pop-imap-webmail and Dan Kuykendall's document on qmail-vmailmgr-imap. However, I still have some basic questions before I start my install. On one hand, the description of VMailMgr at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Qmail-VMailMgr-Courier-imap- HOWTO/introduction.html#WHATISVMAILMGR seems to indicate that it's required by Courier-IMAP for authentication; on the other hand, it seems to indicate that I only need it if I'm using virtual domains. My preference is to only install what's required to meet my specific needs... put simply, that includes adding IMAP and possibly a web interface to my current configuration. Do I have to (or should I) install VMailMgr? Henry Chen's document at http://www.sxpress.com/~henry/qmail-pop- imap-web-howto.htm is almost identical to what I'm trying to accomplish but I am not at all familiar with the RedHat Linux distro and would like to know if I should anticipate any specific problems if I use this document as an install reference. Finally, have I missed some other critical document which would increase my chances of getting this right?
