If you don't like their certification policy, you can always just remove
their root certificate from your browser.

The X509 model is far from perfect, but at least you are able to make such
value judgements. What's the alternative? A single certificate authority,
presumably run by the US government, with nobody else permitted to run one?
I don't find that very appealing.
