It seems that Mozilla (and Netscape too; no big surprise there) establish a new connection to the IMAP server each time you open a different folder. I had the same problem you describe until I set MAXPERIP to 12. You can see these connections if you do a ps on the machine running Courier while you're accessing your mail account through Mozilla. These connections won't disappear until you either choose to work offline or close Mozilla.

I don't know if Mozilla or Netscape have upper limits on the number of connections they maintain.
