Thank You for suggestion. I had not the right entry in
/etc/courier/esmtpd.

But it does not work anyway. Now I get following:

# telnet localhost 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

Do you have ESMTPDSTART="YES" in /etc/courier/esmtpd ?
