I had this problem. It is a bug in vpopmail as far as I know.
Look through this list's archives.

When you compile courier-imap, do:
./configure --with-authvchkpw --without-authdaemon
Disabling authdaemon fixed my server.

Subject: [courier-users] Authentication error: Sometimes users can log,
sometimes not

Hi, I've got a very strange error.

Same user can sometimes log and sometimes not. After authentication daemon
restart (/usr/lib/courier-imap/libexec/authlib/authdaemond restart) he can
log again, till next error.

Example:

user: [EMAIL PROTECTED] pass:a , user: [EMAIL PROTECTED] pass:b

User "a" can log, user "b" cannot!!
After authdaemond restart user "b" can log!!!, but when user "a" logs again,
user "b" cannot!! (so I have to restart authdaemond comtinously!!!)

Any help or idea??

I'm using: RedHat 8.0 + VPOPMAIL + QMAIL

checkpassword-0.90 ucspi-tcp-0.88
vpopmail-5.2.1 courier-imap-1.6.1
daemontools-0.76.tar.gz qmail-1.03

THANKS and Hapy 2003!!

A10!
