And it won't.
If you are using ProcMail, one way to "Fix" the problem is by creating a
Global Procmailrc file in (usually) /etc/procmailrc, and include the line:

        DEFAULT=Maildir/

Won't work.

It *MUST* be:

        /posta/$USER/Maildir/

and in there will be three subdirectories, named tmp/, new/ and cur/.

Why this is so is left as an exercise. (Hint: what is Maildir, and what
mailbox formats does Courier IMAP support?)
