Are you sure ? I have a cluster of 6 machines using courier-imap under
solaris... With about > 600 000 users, so I may be don't know what I am
talking about...

So that maybe I don't know what I am talking about... So please tell me
what I had missed ?
You are implying that an NFS client is not aware when another client
modifies a file on the server.
Server does, but I don't think that server say to all client : "hey this file has
been modified, please update your cache".

And since nfs is mostly based on UDP, such messages can be lost if the
ever existed (yeah it exist on TCP, but lesser usuable because all clients
doesn't works correctly and this also can harvest the server as well).

The behavior of NFS clients varies a lot according of their implementation
and system. Solaris 2.6, 7, 8 has different behavior and bugs according of
patchlevel of your OS. Linux has some as well, FreeBSD 3.x and 4.x are not
same. Then imagine a system that looks at same files with differents NFS clients...

Also since this is based on network, you can never assume that a packet
is arrived on time on the NFS server. So you can never assume that you
will *never* have race conditions about what I am talking about.

My own experiences, and I think that Jrme one, show me that this is true...
So that's the reason I never rely on non unique filenamed flat file on NFS...

Maybe you have another experience about that I will be please to share
with you....
