The ./configure args I used that worked for compiling 0.38.2:
--with-db-api=berkeley
--prefix=/Mail
--with-mailuser=vmail
--with-mailgroup=vmail
--with-waitfunc=wait3
--with-mailuid=99
--with-mailgid=60003
--enable-workarounds-for-imap-client-bugs
--with-shellpath=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/Mail/bin
--without-explicitsync
--without-ipv6
--with-maxmsgsize=24000000
--with-maxformargsize=20000000
--with-maxargsize=20000000
--with-db=db
--enable-utf7-folder-encoding
--enable-unicode=iso-8859-1
--with-authchangepwdir=/Mail/libexec/authlib/changepwd
Hopefully something there will stand out as a reason why it's not working.

Sam,
Thanks for you kind reply. The reverse DNS was working fine. I did a
reverse lookup using nslookup, and returns fine. There is no firewall.
I have packaged a version 0.35.1 I compiled long time ago, installed it on
the same machine, and working fine.
That is the only version I found is working fine with Solaris 8 and above.
I tried to compile version 0.36.1, 0.37.3, 0.38, 0.40.2, all have the same
symptom.
All are compiled with:
./configure --sysconfdir=/etc/courier --with-db=gdbm --with-mailuser=nobody
--with-mailgroup=nobody --enable-mimetypes=/etc/apache/mime.types --without-
authldap --without-authmysql
(for earlier than version 0.37 use --with-waitfunc=wait3)
All compiled with gcc 3.2.1
Even tried with Sun C compiler (Forte 7), with the same result. This took
me 3 days. Kind of tired now.
My conclusion is, only version 0.35.1 works fine with Solaris 8 and above.
Andrew

Most likely the reverse DNS lookup and/or identd is stalled. Fix the
reverse DNS, and/or disable any broken firewalls.
