[courier-users] New installation problems

I'm trying to set up a mailserver on linux (mandrake 8.2, qmail, courier-imap). I've got courier-imap up and supposedly running but when I try to telnet in to test it out it doesn't seem to want to let me in. This is my first mailserver so you'd probably better warm up your flamethrower, because I'm sure the problem is my fault. Anyone have an idea of what I did wrong or at least some more questions about how I have it set up?
