[courier-users] sqwebmail fails authorisation for some users

I have set up sqwebmail as a web interface for vpopmail accounts.  The regular pop access & authentication works perfectly for all users on all virtual domains.  Using webmail however, authentication succeeds for some users, but fails for most (the interface INVALID USER ID OR PASSWORD).  I've scoured mailings lists for a cure to this problem, but to no avail.  Please help.
