Hi courier-users: I am looking to replace an ailing mail server, and my tests have concluded that a good fit here would be the following: Postfix with Anomy Sanitizer (http://mailtools.anomy.net/) and SpamAssassin, and Courier-IMAP on FreeBSD or Linux. A separate OpenLDAP server will be used for authentication. Migration isn't an issue, as I will just use ImapFilter if nothing else works. I haven't managed Courier-IMAP before, but I like what I have seen so far. I have a couple of questions about the software though:
1. How much server do I need? I have roughly 10,000 users, all but a few of whom will use IMAP (a few will use POP3). The average user disk quota will be 50 MB. I found some numbers in various places and estimated a fast dual Xeon with 2-4 GB RAM and a SCSI RAID 5 (10,000 RPM) would work for me. I want to be able to support 500 concurrent IMAP users and still have the system be responsive for those users. Can other admins on this list tell me their experiences, tell me if I want the impossible, if my specs are way off base, etc. 2. How much of my time will be taken up managing this thing, or How much can I script? In the past, with Sendmail and UW IMAP, I have been able to script almost all operation of the system, with only the need to occasionally log in and bump up a user's quota or dequeue a 150 MB attachment that someone sent. I would expect to be able to do the same with Postfix and Courier. Again, can other admins tell me if my assumptions are correct here?
