at least I've found the problem. It was not that complicated and already dokumented here, albeit it didn't seem to apply (there is a mail where Sam says the PID has to be the same and I thought he meant the name of the user):
The server was setup using a self-rolled rpm. The UID and GID on the new system were not the same as on the original buildhost. There is a numeric PID and GID in the binary, which seems to be rather stupid. Maybe I get around to fix this bug.
So the fix was to deinstall the rpm's, add the users and groups with the very same numeric values and reinstall the rpm.
