Dear Courier Experts: The organization I am working for is using the courier-mta and courier-mta-ssl package that came with the debian distribution for quite some time now. People that work at the office site are using plain esmtp to connect to courier, while People that work from their Home-Office are using esmtp over ssl. I did not change the default configuration of the package except that I replaced the certififcate that was automatically generated with one that is signed by our Certification authority. Things were wonderful while all of the clients were using Outlook 2000 as their clients. Unfortunately, some people are planning to switch to Outlook XP. While this works great for internal clients (plain esmtp), esmtp over ssl breaks: Outlook tries for about 30sec to transmit the message, after that a window pops up, saying that it could not transmit the message because it got a timeout while waiting for a response from the mta (smtp-server). In /var/log/mail.info I get an output that could be related to this: it says: ... esmtpd-ssl: starttls: accept: error:00000000:lib:(0):func(0):reason(0). With Outlook 2K I don't get any error messages. After reading the courier documentation, I first thought that this was a smtpaccess issue. But since Outlook 2K on the same network segment works perfectly well, and Outlook XP works in plain esmtp-mode as well, I figured that this was not the problem. I heard some rumors, that Outlook 2000 defaults to plain smtp if smtp over ssl fails for some reasons, while in Outlook XP this fallback is disabled. I tcpdumped the traffic and I found that the receiving and the sending email-address are sent in a readable form with plain smtp and in a non-readable form with smtp over ssl. So I believe that Outlook 2K does not fallback to plain smtp in my case. Do you have any idea what might be going on? If you need any more details, outputs of conf-files please let me know. Thanks for your help.
