Using Google groups I found http://groups.google.com/groups?q=+%22authdaemon:+s_connect()+failed:+Operation%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=ajbmje%241egj%241%40FreeBSD.csie.NCTU.edu.tw&rnum=6 which described sqwebmail using a different copy of authdaemon than IMAP. I tried the solution proposed there, but either did the wrong thing or I have a different problem.
I strongly suspect this is a very simple newbie problem...
