But there is a very good reason James. Don't get me wrong - I don't consider changing or violating an RFC a light thing, but there are many good cases made all the time... Consider couriers 8 bit warning messages... I've not met (personally) the person who hasn't had some user complain because messages that most other MTA's will pass are altered by courier according to RFC. Courier is right, but annoys the end users, so we patch it.
One reason many people want IMAP in the first place is for efficient centralized server side storage of large volumes of mail. They store archives of messages they read from multiple locations. Speed is essential to efficient message delivery. When single user accounts cause a large impact on a storage system because they archive their message by the year instead of by the month, it impacts all users and change the cost of the solution dramatically. Changing to a "unique" identifier instead of a "sequential" identifier... or finding a NEW way to arrive at a sequential identifier without maintaining a database which can too easily become obsoleted adds too much overhead with larger message folders. I'm just looking for an answer for those of us who stress our servers... It may not be without tradeoffs, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be explored. The tradeoffs may be worth it (as long as it's an option that doesn't effect those who don't need it). m/ ------------------------------------------------------- This sf.net email is sponsored by:ThinkGeek Welcome to geek heaven. http://thinkgeek.com/sf _______________________________________________ courier-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/courier-users
