You can specify a suitale time interval in faxqueuetime. See courier(8).
The information for faxqueuetime references queuetime. queuetime has a default of 1 week, if the file does not exist.
Is it safe to assume, that faxqueuetime does not have a default, hence returning the message as undeliverable after the first try?
Actually, faxqueuetime has a smaller default - 1 day, which needs to be documented...
