i did ultimately work the problem out.
it had nothing to do with authentication, really. the logs were misleading,
and the client being used for testing (Outlook Express version <mumble>)
wasn't conveying the error message it was getting.
i found out what the error really was by telneting to the server on the
pop3 port and manually entering the USER and PASS pop3 commands. it was a
stupid mistake, now fixed, and everything is working fine.
