I appreciate your helping out here, but I've tried to compile the more
recent cone release on a newer machine (gcc 2.96 / RedHat 7.3) and it's
no go there, either.  Both issues remain: the wchar.h issue and the 
above issue.

I'm basically giving up until I get a newer distro, which of course
might be some time. 

If you want me to continue trying, I'll do that, but I'm not expecting
that it should work on anything prior to gcc 3.2.
