Yes, you should be running authdaemon, but it should be running with authuserdb enabled. Within your authdaemonrc file, find the line that reads: authmodulelist="authmodules listed here" ...and insert authuserdb into the quotes. If you're going to be using other authmodules in the future, you can leave them there as well (within the quotes, separated by spaces). For instance: authmodulelist="authpam authuserdb authmysql" It sounds like this should be the final piece of the puzzle that you're missing, assuming that you ran makeuserdb again after specifying home= in the userdb file.
