SMTP is just crawling today. To send a messsage via smntp takes 20sec-5min or just failes.
If the delay is mostly in the initial connection, check for a dead DNS server listed in /etc/resolv.conf; check for stalled reverse DNS on the connecting IP addresses; check for a misbehaving firewall that's dropping identd packets.
