Unfortunately with the version of courier I use, your instructions are
incompatible and did not work. I found that
either eliminating the "/etc/courier/me" file or adding it's contents to
"/etc/courier/locals" fixed the problem.

The documents in my distrubution state that a zero-length "$HOME/.courier"
file forces use of the system defaults.
It also states that a missing .courier file is treated as a zero-length
file. While my copy of the documentation does
not explicity say what happens with a zero-length ".courier-default" file, I
surmise it would be treated as though it does
not exist.

Anyway I appreciate your encouragement and assistance.
