Alas, I've still not been able to get anywhere with this after another few hours. (See original message below this one)
Surely getting courier-imap to work with vpopmail/Maildir folders in /home/vpopmail/domains and vchkpwd is doable? I see a lot of people are using maildrop etc. But surely...? Does anyone have a link to a detailed 'howto' for just vpopmail and courier-imapd? It looks like a no-brainer on the surface - but it just wont work for me :( (I see a lot of userdb and maildrop and other things I've never heard of until now... I'm not really in a position to change my entire setup just so imapd will work for me and I feel certain I don't have to (?) ) I already have qmail and vpopmail running and have had quite happily for several years now for many users across many domains. It's just imap that wont find the Maildir folders or something - the error message simply doesn't say WHAT it can't find. Sam Varshavchik wrote: |> * BYE [ALERT] Fatal Error: No such file or directory | |This indicates that even though the userid/passwd for this account is |correct, it's home directory or maildir field is not set correctly. I looked into this and replied as follows: |The following line exists in /home/vpopmail/domains/cybermedix.co.nz/vpasswd | |<encryptedpw>:1:0:mail:/home/vpopmail/domains/cybermedix.co.nz/mail:500 0 0000 | |That to me looks as though the home directory is set correctly (?) | |Also, qmail and vpopmail are hapily accepting and delivering messages for this account. Would that not also suggest the home directory is set correctly? [Ed. Meaning "set up and structured correctly"] | |Perhaps it's some kind of permissions thing? However: [Ed. In /home/vpopmail/domains/ ...] |drwx------ 7 vpopmail vchkpw 4096 Jul 16 14:07 cybermedix.co.nz/ |drwxr----- 6 vpopmail vchkpw 4096 Sep 13 23:39 cybermedix.co.nz/mail/Maildir/ | |And in /usr/lib/courier-imap/etc/imapd we have the line: | |TCPDOPTS="-nodnslookup -noidentlookup -user=vpopmail -group=vchkpw" |So, as far as I can see, everything is correct. Though, surely, my definition of "everything" in this |instance is incomplete :( I really need some way of getting more debug information out of imapd so I can actually see exactly what is going on. "Fatal error. File not found" feel too much like dealing with Micro$oft 'blue light error reports' all over again. Unlike most every other *nix program imapd just doesn't seem to have much debug info available. There must be a way to turn on verbose debug though? I can't find such in any docs or man pages for looking. I must be blind. I must be. Help! Anyone? [resend using the correct subscribed email addr. This time. Apologies Mr./Ms. moderator] Hi. I must be blind. I feel certain this topic must have been bashed to death by many in the past - but after several hours I just can't seem to see the forest for the trees :( I run QMail and vpopmail with virtual domains in /home/vpopmail/domains I want to get courier-imap running so I can use Squirrel Mail and also have the benefits IMAP offers over POP3. I've followed several general 'how to install IMAP' paths and all seem to result in funtioning IMAP server on port 143 allowing authentication via vchkpw - HOWEVER... I telnet to localhost 143 and enter a login line for an account in my vpopmail virtual domains. That works fine. Specifically: "1 login [EMAIL PROTECTED] <password>[enter]" (/home/vpopmail/domains/cybermedix.co.nz/mail/Maildir exists and is all working fine with QMail and POP3 etc.) BUT... when I then type "2 select inbox[enter]" (or INBOX) imapd just closes the telnet connection with the following message: * BYE [ALERT] Fatal Error: No such file or directory There is no entry made at this point in /var/log/mail (the login event is there) so I have no idea what file or directory imapd was attempting to locate. I can not find anything anywhere about how to get more debugging information out of imapd - so I'm stumped :'( Any clues anyone? Just point me to a document or something - I'm more than happy to put in the time and do the grunt research - I just seem to have hit a dead end at present <sigh>. I'm assuming one thing - "I must be wrong in my assumption that vchkpw supplies the directory information (home dir) to imapd after logging in the way pam_unix does for shell logins." - though I'm beggared if I can see how in the world imapd finds out where my Maildir is any other way. No doubt this is key to the trouble I'm having! Thanks.
