will probably fix your problem - some clients (Outlook for example) can have
2 connections per account - so in a case where my busiest client has 10
computers and 2 accounts per computer - and up to 2 connections per account,
I need to allow 40 connections per IP (well lets say 45 to leave a buffer)
or they get connection errors.

now that I've finally found the actual file I needed to edit
I've allowed 20 ... seems to be plenty for 4 accounts from the one client (OS X mail.app)

cheers for that
such a simple thing and yet I've now got no hair
