UIDL management changed in the 2.x series. When upgrading from 1.x, the existing UIDLs are preserved; but if you started with 2.1 and downgraded 1.x (which is essentially what you did, in your little experiment), the 1.x POP3 server did not understand 2.1's UIDLs, and assigned its own UIDLs.
OK, I don't want to argue, but that's not what I did. I took a 1.6 installation and upgraded to 2.1. When I did, it immediately started handing out a different UIDL than the other servers.
Let's say I want to start over. I can install 1.6 back on this server and it will hand out the same UIDL as the other two servers do. What do I need to do to make sure that when I upgrade to 2.1 it keeps handing out the same UIDL as before? From where does it get that UIDL anyway?
In fact, I've done just that. This machine is now running 1.6 and I've verified that UIDL returns the same UIDL as the other 1.6 clients. All three machines return the same UIDL. What do I have to do to upgrade to 2.1 and make it return the same UIDLs as the 1.6 clients? It appears to me that make install-strip, make install-configure doesn't do it as that's exactly what I did before.
The UIDLs for 1.6 are obviously just the filename without any flags. Doing UIDL on an account with lots of messages, I can see that the list of messages is just filenames, with everything before the :. The UIDL I saw from the 2.1 server was totally different. How do I make the 2.1 server return filenames for UIDLs an not the other thing?
