For best results, you should be running Linux or IRIX on the server, with FAM enabled, and using an IMAP client that supports the IDLE IMAP extension.
speaking of FAM - has anybody ever used FAM together with courier-imap (on linux) in a larger environment? - we have never been successful in deploying it on our production system (~60k mailboxes) due to lots of crashes.
