You probably need to use authshadow


authpwd
authenticates from the /etc/passwd file.

authshadow
like authpwd except passwords are read from /etc/shadow.

courier-imap always uses $HOME/Maildir/, it gets $HOME from the auth method,
in your case it will be whatever is in /etc/passwd
