It's coded into each individual module. imaplogin specifies imap or imaps, pop3login specifies pop3 or pop3s, etc...

Maybe they or he can comment on if that is any easier now than it was before
(I had mentioned the concept about a year ago I think, but if I remember
right people thought it would be a difficult change).

No, it's a difficult change. The authentication protocol does not provide for passing on any additional parameters.
