OK, I think I see the problem.  It looks to me from the code that for a 
smarthost to be recognized the ":" needs to be the first character on the 
line.  So change your file to say

: mail1.telia.com

without any characters before the ":".

I just changed my esmtproutes file and put a tab in front of the entry and it 
stopped working.  Removing the tab in front fixed it.
