Hi,
I would like to hear your opinion on how safe it is to open the port 143 on my firewall so that some family members are able to read their mail via the internet from my server.
I do not plan to use ssl because you either have to pay for a certificate or have to accept a safety clause before checking the mail every time.
Using mozilla mail you can accept the Courier certificate permanently without having to pay for a CA certified cert. It also has excellent IMAP support, the best of any client I know of. I don't advocate sending credentials plain text over the internet, but that's your call.

So do you feel that my idea is very bad or can you say the courier-imap daemon is stable enough and does not have big security wholes that it is OK if I open the port?
