OK, time to show my ignorance.  The top level configure in the 0.44.0 source 
says 

ac_default_prefix=/usr/local

and then goes on to define

test "x$prefix" = xNONE && prefix=$ac_default_prefix

Doesn't that mean that if you don't supply a "--prefix" to configure then 
"/usr/local" is going to get used?  So then couriertls would be in 
/usr/local/bin?  (I freely admit I know nothing about configure, make, etc. 
so I'm very happy to be shown the error of my ways!)
