Not sure we're talking about the same thing - my understanding ot the
original mail was that the problem was experienced between courier and the
destination mail server.

If the destination mail server does content scanning, the response to the
"." could be held pending the results of the scan. If that were to persist
for long enough (and extra scanning COULD occur depending on the origin IP
address, explaining the different response for the different connection
mentioned) then courier could give up thinking the server is busy.

That's why I suggested testing with Telnet. Doesn't matter if you are
actually sending Spam, but if the receiving side is checking for it, what
their methods are, and how long they take.

This may be what we are experiencing too, roughly 5% of our
clients are reporting "dropouts" when sending email and there
is no discernable pattern, so far.

What timeout value are you referring to ?

The only one I can see by grepping /etc courier/* is...

imapd:IMAP_IDLE_TIMEOUT=60
