Procmail has the following rather nice utility:

DESCRIPTION
       mailstat parses a procmail-generated $LOGFILE and displays
a summary about the messages delivered to all folders
(total size, average size, nr of messages). The $LOGFILE
is truncated to zero length, unless the -k option is used.
Exit code 0 if mail arrived, 1 if no mail arrived.

I switched over to maildrop from procmail yesterday, and I used to have
a nice cron job that would do the following:

mailstat -l .procmail/log

  Total Average Number Folder
  ----- ------- ------ ------
 179609 3592 50 Maildir/
  93542 5196 18 IN.SPAM/

  28788 4112 7 IN.codalist/
   3537 3537 1 IN.heimdal/
  60654 3790 16 IN.krbdev/
  14325 2865 5 IN.libc-alpha/

  ----- ------- ------
2338776 4088 572

So, does anyone have something like this already, and if not, if I write
one, can we get it included in the next release of courier?

Somone asked my why I work on this free (http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/)
software stuff and not get a real job. Charles Shultz had the best answer:

"Why do musicians compose symphonies and poets write poems? They do it
because life wouldn't have any meaning for them if they didn't. That's why
I draw cartoons. It's my life." -- Charles Shultz
