You probably weren't patient enough. The identd query times out after 30 seconds.
client will timeout. This happend both with Outlookand Outlook Express. But running Outlook express to another mailserver also running 0.44 works.
Go look for a misconfigured firewall somewhere between the client, and the first mail server.
