Sam, thanks for your pointer. I think there may be a little glitch in the installations scripts as customised for BSD, but I may be incorrect. Anyway, by re-installing and choosing the default user "mailnull" I have a working setup now.
I also had to change ownerships to mailnull in the /var/spool/courier tree, and in the tree of workfiles used by my perlfilter scripts. All seems well now. Thanks again.
