[courier-users] Auth problems with esmtproutes and esmtpauthclient

For reasons that I cannot explain, I am getting 535 Auth Failed errors 
between two courier mail servers. I am using a username and password that 
is known to work correctly when authenticating via an email client. Here 
is my configuration:

client: knee.xtime.com (courier-0.44)
 - esmtproutes file:
:mail.buberel.org
 - esmtpauthclient files:
mail.buberel.org username password
server: mail.buberel.org (courier-0.43)
 - esmtpd config file:
ESMTPAUTH="PLAIN LOGIN CRAM-MD5"
In the log file on knee.xtime.com:

The server (mail.buberel.org) is configured to use authpam as it's 
authentication system, and this has been working just fine for several 
years for normail mail clients.

I suspect this has something to do with the client (knee.xtime.com) trying 
to use CRAM-MD5 with a server that uses authpam as it's authentication 
backend. Even if I change the 'esmtpd' configuration on the server to:

ESMTPAUTH="PLAIN"

The authentication fails with the same error as before, indicating that 
the client (knee.xtime.com) is still trying to use CRAM-MD5 passwords.
