It's not. I don't remember exactly what's wrong, but I'm pretty sure the '.' character has a special meaning right after the macro that happens to precede it in this instance. Older releases of docbook didn't translate the '.' to its escaped sequence, so it gets munged. Newer releases should not have this bug.
