Compiling courier without the fax stuff, I get this:
$ rpm -ta courier-0.44.2.20040114.tar.bz2 --without fax
error: Installed (but unpackaged) file(s) found:
Don't use "--without fax" unless you don't have the required fax components installed. You should be able to compile courier without that flag, and simply not install the resulting fax package.
