famd is the File Alteration Monitor daemon. It's a separate program from courier. The errors mean courier was compiled with fam support, but it's not present on your system.

Simply get fam, start it and everything will work properly. No need to restart anything ;)

I can't find any reference to famd, nor to maildirwatch, among the courier
documentation. This problem has only surfaced recently, and it does not
seem to actually cause any problem - my imap access to my server SEEMS to be
working, but the logs are filling up with the above messages repeated
hundreds of times....
