   $unix_socketname = "/usr/lib/courier/var/allfilters/amavisd";
   $unix_socket_protocol = 'courier';


Being suspicious of the single quotes, I changed them to double -- it didn't complain either way -- but it caused no change in behavior. I also confirmed there are no other instances where these variables are being set in the file.

No wrapper needed -- just make sure you have amavisd configured such that it knows it's playing with Courier (search for '$unix_socket_protocol' in amavisd.conf and make sure it's set to 'courier'). Amavisd knows to look for and close the appropriate file handle.
