So, basically... if you're using encrypted passwords (ala shadow), then might as well take CRAM out of the auth list?

For CRAM-MD5 authentication to work your passwords need to be stored in 
plaintext.  If your users' passwords are stored hashed then you can only use 
"PLAIN LOGIN" for authentication.
