On eudora, mailbox sync almost always fails, but it doesn't give the error message.
On the Max, sometimes it will not stay connected and goes off line, and sometimes it doesn't.
Where on my server can I look for more details on what is happening.
In maillog, I just see the logins and logouts, and nothing more.
When the server reports an error, the report to the mail client always includes a descriptive error message.
Your mail client should be displaying the error message received from the server.
Eudora is not giving a descriptive message. It just says synchronization failed. It has a ":" following that message like there should be something more.
mail.app on OS X gives failures like "imap command select failed" or "imap command create failed." In addition, it often won't stay "online" and the reason it gives for being offline is connection failed. In my maillog, though, I see the connection fine.
It almost seems like there are intermittent permission problems. At one point or another, everything works. Just not consistently.
Is there anywhere to get the detail of what courier-imap is sending the client and why, since there doesn't seem to currently be adequate logging as I have it configured.
To follow up on this in case anyone stumbles upon this thread sometime in the future:
1. I never could get additional logging to work. However, that did
not stop me from getting rid of all the errors. I added
IMAPDEBUGFILE to my conf file, but even though the file I
pointed that at existed with wide open permissions, imapd
would not start as long as that was in the conf file.2. There were several fixes involved in getting rid of all the strange
errors reported above:- upgrade courier-imap on the server to the latest and greatest
- change MAXPERIP from the default of 4: mail.app on mac osx
opens a fair number of sessions- change USELOCKS to 1.
- upgrade eudora from 5.1 to 6.1. 5.1 does not handle imap
folders on the remote server very well at all.Now both eudora and mail.app seem pretty happy.
