You've obviously read on, and see that it still doesn't work.

Honestly, I assumed that it wouldn't hurt to change group ownership on
the directory to another nologin user.  After all, how else would
another process interact with the authdaemon to do something as
important as letting webmail users change their passwords?

Sorry, not the case.  This is exactly why I did a clean install from a
freshly built RPM (ie. I removed the old rpm's before reinstalling, and
the rpm's are built straight from your .45.4 tarball).  I only changed
the authdaemon socket directory, and now it's back to normal.

ok, just double checking again, now that permissions are "correct" on
the directory (although it really would be nice to have a way to let
apache talk to authdaemon, or at least offer some suggestions for how to
talk to the authdaemon to check passwords, etc), the permissions error
seems to be gone, but I still get:  

Apr 25 20:36:05 indra submit: Transport endpoint is not connected
