I just had a complaint from a pop3 user that his mailbox contained more
than 200,000 email messages. They turned out to be bounce messages. A
quick check found another mail account with another 100,000 of these
messages.

I'm not 100% sure, but it seems to me that courier has been busy,
packaging and sending bounce-messages to the same users on the local
server ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), in an endless loop.

I'm running courier 0.38.1.

I'm wondering if this is due to a local configuration error, or if there
is another problem.

Check the account's .courier file to see if they're doing something stupid.
