Make sure that you have used the userdb script to create this records, and the password field is generated by userdbpw.

Hmm. An what now? The only reason I can rule out is a typo in the
password, as I've double- and triple-checked that one.

You can do triple-DES or MD5-hash encryption by hand? Very impressive.
