Stupid question perhaps, but have you checked that Courier is running (ps auwx) and that it is listning on your port? (netstat -A inet -lnp). My experience is that if you cannot connect and you don't see any error-messages anywhere, Courier failed to start. Usually some configuration-setting, file-permission problem or alike.
