Courier does not drop the connection. Instead of using a normal mail client to read your mail, you are using, instead, a buggy virus distribution software called "Outlook Express". When it gets confused by its own bugs, it drops the connection, and blames the server for its own bugs.

Stop using Outlook Express.
It is very annoying to get interrupted when downloading emails.
