If I surround a delivery instruction with an exception and the delivery fails due to a non-existent folder, will the message be delivered to the default location, or will the mail still back up in the queue due to the failed delivery attempt?
It depends on what you mean by "delivery fails".
If your script explicitly terminates with exit, the delivery is considered complete.
If your script normally would cause maildrop to terminate with an error, instead script execution will resume following the exception statement.
